Droplr was founded by Josh Bryant and Levi Nunnink in July 2009. It was originally only available for Mac, but is now available for Windows and iPhone. A Pro version has just been added to the existing application as well. An approximate average of 6,000 unique visitors to the site are tracked each month.
Droplr is similar to Dropbox, but is easier to use and is more about sharing files with other people rather than storage and sharing across machines. Dropbox is generally a professional file sharing application and Droplr is its social media cousin, made for sharing images, documents, or other files in various ways via link rather than via password protected cloud storage.
While Dropbox could fill social sharing needs, Droplr is easier for this exchange and is created specifically to connect to social media networks.
The app may be used online or downloaded for Mac, Windows, or iPhone.
The downloaded app supports drag and drop for files to the Dropzone on the desktop. This copies the file to Droplr. The copy can be accessed online by clicking open in browser. The newly created link to the file can be copied from the Dropzone as well. The custom URL can then be shared via social network or however the user chooses.
When opened in the browser, the file may be shared with one click to Facebook, Twitter, embedding in a website, or email. Users may also see how many times a file has been viewed by right clicking the Dropzone icon.
Users may compose notes, grab screenshots, and choose the position of the Dropzone with right click as well.
The application is simple and is basically a useful file sharing tool. The contact and support is via a support forum/knowledge base. It would be helpful to have a tutorial section and a contact form or contact information for users rather than this type of forum setting.
Initial use, while easy once figured out, was trial and error without some kind of explanatory document or guide.
Registration can be done via dropdown menu on the home page requesting only an email and password. Submission generates an email with activation code to be sent to the provided address.
There is no formal pricing page, but within the settings on the dashboard, users may upgrade to the Pro version which eliminates ads, increases storage to 100GB (from 1GB in the free version), larger file uploads of up to 1 GB, statistics, customized drop views and themes, and a custom domain for $3/month.
Anyone who would like a cloud-based, file or image sharing application will likely find Droplr beneficial to use. In addition, the ability to share text or code snippets with syntax highlighting are also very useful. App developers will appreciate the public API for integration into other applications. Basically, this is the file sharing app for everybody, not just business people.
